Big Rocks, WW Turkey Trot & The Fam

First DanFam5 celebrated Thanksgiving with our 'Easter Cousins' at Aunt Sharon's. Always glad to see my Grandma Hoard and the rest of the family.

We went to Rock City this time. It's a national natural landmark. They claim it as a 'geological wonder' on their pamphlet, and I will agree with them. It's pretty amazing.

Straight away Abe found the Death Star.

There are about 200 huge rocks in an area about the size of two football fields. Millions of years ago when Kansas was covered by an inland sea, Dakota Sandstone was deposited here. After the sea receded, the bottom of the sea became the land surface. Ground waters containing dissolved calcium carbonate seeped through porous sandstone, cementing the sand grains together. These spherical concretions slowly increased in size as more layers of sand grains were cemented. Eventually the softer ground surrounding the sandstone was eroded, which left these cement-hard balls totally exposed, while there are more in the ground that only have their tops showing.

The following day, DanFam5 participated in the 1st Annual WW Turkey Trot. Little Lijee is being a slow poke to join us, as he was not real excited about it.

The WW stands for Whining and Walking, which was allowed but not preferred. While this photo was staged, that was really the look from the kids pretty much the whole time.

We ran (some walked) down to the old station. Us 3 kids spent a lot of time playing on this old propane tank when we were little.

Later that day we had Thanksgiving with Mom's side of the family. This is the fireplace that Uncle Gary built. Mom and Dad brought those huge rocks from an old house on the farm land that Sister owns a few miles away. Pretty hard work for a couple of old folks.
