Halloween 2011: The Good, The Bad and The Cuddly

Getting ready to Trick-or-Treat with The Williams and Bryce

While trick-or-treating, one lady asked Zeke who he was.  He told her a ninja, then  stepped away to grab his sword.  He went back to the door with the sword up in the air and asked her, "Now do you recognize me?"
Daisy carried her baby with her the entire night.  Sweet little thing was looking after Elijah; she kept getting a candy for herself and then telling them she needed another piece for her baby brother.  Most of them assumed she was just being greedy and getting one for her baby, and not her actual baby brother.
Elijah didn't get what all the excitement was all about.

Get Out The Butter Knife

It's that time of year when we bust out the sharp knives and pointy tools and try to keep the kids' hands off them as we commence sawing away at that thick pumpkin skin, trying in vain to make something creative and artsy.

I had been building up the pumpkin carving day to the kids.  When we got home, I heard Zeke go out the door, assuming it was the back door.  About 5 minutes later we found him.  He was on the front porch, butter knife in hand, working away.  At least he was being self-sufficient by grabbing the only knife he is allowed to get.
Daisy does not like to get her hands dirty with the pumpkin guts.  This is the extent of her hands-on work.
The Little Guy couldn't get there fast enough for his liking.
And now for the ewy-gooey stuff.
Guess it's a boy thing.
"May as well taste it while I'm at it."
I love the way Eli's looking up at his Daddy here.
The finished product.
It's hard getting 3 kids' attention at the same time...
Random family shot.  This is a sample of our daily life.
 Happy Halloween!

Is That Your Dog?

Our doggy is, for the most part, a pretty good dog.  Probably her biggest fault is that she was born to run.  I mentioned that in the post awhile back when we went to my parents.  Earlier this week she got out the front and that dog ran for 4 1/2 hours.  It's all fun and games for her.  She runs by and looks back at you, tail wagging, tongue hanging out the side, and I swear she smirks the whole time.  If the kids were ever quiet enough I'm pretty sure you could hear her saying, "Nanny nanny boo boo."

We took her for a family walk today at the lake where she could get out and run.  It was perfect in every way, from the weather down to the family time.
After almost 2 hours of Frito Pie chasing birds, splashing in the water and general running, we loaded in the Swagger Wagon.  Frito Pie, aparently, did not think it was time to go home.  She began to play her 'cat and mouse' game.  We started to pull out of the parking lot, thinking she would jump in the car so she wouldn't be left behind.

This is where we were wrong.  If any of you have ever had to chase down a mule who has gotten out (and I am thinking of one family in particular who knows what I am speaking of, Lynes) they are obnoxious little creatures to catch until they are darn well good and ready...very much like our dog.  I am transported back in time 30 years ago when it comes to trying to catch this dog.  Abe acts very much like my Dad, except he is not angry with Frito Pie and Dad was, well, let's just say 'angry' with Pete and leave it at that.

Abe decided to give her the run that she wanted, very much like Dad used to do with Pete (Abe casually said it, minus the curse words that I may or may not have heard 30 years ago).  The difference between now and 30 years ago was that Abe drove away and had the dog follow us and I was terrified she was going to be run over by passing cars, where as Dad actually chased the mule with the truck while I was terrified Pete was going to be run over by us (maybe on accident, maybe not).

We had Frito Pie chase us down as we sped down the road at 30 mph or more.  At the beginning  a bicyclist who had stopped to watch the melee told us good luck.  A mile or so later we passed a parking lot with several cars and people.  One man called out, "Is that your dog?" and we yelled out the window as we were speeding by, "Yeeeessss."  I am pretty sure it appeared that we were trying to dump our dog and the poor thing was chasing us down.  A call may or may not have been placed to the Humane Society reporting us; that is yet to be determined.

We did stop after a couple miles and Frito Pie was finally ready to get in.  I firmly believe she did not learn a lesson, much like the mules, but at least we were able to catch her for today.  History repeats itself, so will my kids one day have their dog, or mule, chase them down the road, too?

Elijah: The Lord Is My God

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all  your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Today was Elijah's dedication.  The ceremony is a way to publicly share that Abe and I have dedicated ourselves to raising Eli in a Christ-centered home.  We chose Proverbs 3:5 for his verse.  I pray Elijah will trust in The Lord throughout his life, even when our earthly understanding does not grasp God's plans.   And as he grows, I pray he will learn to submit to God, who will in turn set Eli's path straight.

What Grandmas Do Best

Just had a great visit with my Mom and Dad and Koko.  Daisy somehow convinced Grandpa to make the long drive to Texas, which is not an easy task.
Grandma, Zeke and Daisy had a water gun fight.

Grandpa, Eli, Koko, and Frito Pie didn't think that looked like much fun.
Daisy thought Grandpa should join the fun.  She's squirting him and he's trying to stop it.
Zeke played hooky from school for the first time, but we still found time to show Grandma his classroom and the playground.
My Mom also found time to do the stuff that Grandmas do best...
love on us.  <3

Deep Thoughts

We were driving home enjoying the lightning show last night, and the kids were concerned we might be struck.  I explained there was a small possibility, but it wasn't likely.  Next they were concerned that Frito Pie was outside at home.  Then Daisy busts out with a Jack Handy Deep Thought:  "If lightning gets our dog dead, then I will be sad.  But if lightning doesn't get our dog dead, then I won't be sad."
Luckily, lightning didn't get our dog dead.
